Description
Yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus flavirostris) perching on a dead tree. Hornbills have a long curved bill and long rounded wings. This bird, one of the smallest of the hornbills, can reach over half a metre in height. It has a mutual association with the dwarf mongoose (Helogale parvula). The hornbill eats insects that are disturbed by the mongoose. In return, the hornbill protects the mongoose from predators. When breeding, the female is walled-up in the nest hole and fed by the male. The yellow-billed hornbill is found throughout the jungles and scrublands of Africa below the Sahara. Photographed in the Kalahari, South Africa.
