Description
There are places, and Zion National Park in Utah, USA, is one of them, where the natural landscape is so majestic, so sweeping, so incredibly different from a delightful country meadow (although there are those there, too) that one gapes in awe at the vista.
Natural vertical rock edifices rise from seemingly nowhere, reaching out and up to the sky, daring one to try to reach their peaks.
And many people do take up that dare, some of them experienced rock climbers who scale the craggy faces of the cliffs. Others are not professional rock climbers, but rather, tourists and visitors who decide to take a hike along the many trails in the park.
One of these trails, Angel’s Landing, attracts swarms of hikers and walkers each year, which is fairly interesting, because it is not an easy (1500 vertical feet, 5.4 miles total) nor a particularly safe, climb, although there are chain ropes to hang onto as the path narrows on its way toward the top.
As one approaches the sharp, narrow spine toward the top (you can see this as the central rock edifice in the painting, Where Angels Land), there is a drop off on either side – and, unusual in a country that sets up fences as a Safety First precaution just about everywhere – there are no barriers to slipping and falling, should one be careless, or mucking about, or not paying attention.
(It is a testament to many people’s ability to not be careless, or mucking about, or not paying attention in critical situations that there are not swarms of people falling off Angel’s Landing each year.)
The view at the top is spectacular.
Where Angels Land invites the viewer to step into this world of vertical cliffs, this land of majestic natural edifices that stand silently, watchfully, over the landscape. Be in a place of quiet and awe, far from the walls and the fences that too often attempt to circumscribe our daily lives.
